Date: 2016-03-28 03:34 pm (UTC)The firearms and accessories in this lot were owned by collector, former Mount Dora mayor, and Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection veteran Walter Deaves Patton. He served in the 11th Cavalry in the Philippines. The included document file states that he was involved in 40 to 45 battles between November 9th, 1899, and his discharge on March 13, 1901. Some details of these battles are covered by an antique "Memorandum" journal written by Patton and notes written down by his son. Clippings from a newspaper discussing his bid for re-election at the age of 80 notes that the carbine he used while in the Philippines was part of his gun collection. The document file also includes several photographs of Patton in which he is armed with a Colt Single Action and Krag carbine, a commercial holster with cartridge loops, and an earlier style Mill's pattern cartridge belt without "U.S." buckle. A pair of brown leather riding boots, a canvas cartridge belt with brass "U.S." buckle and loops for rifle ammunition, and two holsters are included. The holsters are of different designs: one is an 1881 type 5 pattern flap holster with "U.S." embossed on the flap, and the other is Mexican single loop style civilian holster. The carbine has a brass muzzle cover, blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, saddle ring and bar on the left flat (the Model 1898 was the last U.S. arm to have this), "MODEL 1898." and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 122619" on the side of the receiver, proper Model 1898 stock and handguard, and flat buttplate with trapdoor compartment (empty). A cartouche is not visible on the stock, but traces of the circled script "P" are visible behind the lower tang.
